The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra inaugurated the temporary exhibition "Narcissus" on 19 February.
The genus Narcissus, which includes around 19 species in Portugal, is thought to have originated in the Iberian Peninsula. This exhibition presents a selection of this diversity, with plants from the collection assembled by Abílio Fernandes (former director of the Botanical Garden between 1942 and 1974) in the 1960s, and specimens from the Garden's more recent expeditions.
Visitors will be able to see the Algarve Junquilho (Narcissus willkommii), a species native to the Algarve and now threatened with extinction, or the Orthenarcissus (Narcissus scaberulus), first described by Júlio Henriques from plants grown in the Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra.
The exhibition will run until 28 March on the terrace of the Tropical Greenhouse. Click here for further information (in Portuguese).
