The Portuguese Association of Political Economy (EcPol) will host its 8th Annual Meeting at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra from 30 January to 1 February. The event has as its theme "Political Economy for a Just Life: Theoretical and Practical Challenges," and aims to reflect on the challenges facing contemporary societies in a context marked by social injustices, inequalities, climate change and precarious work, amid a growing distortion of the concepts of freedom and justice.

The meeting is open to professionals from different fields, as well as to the general public. It will explore the relationship between the organisation of substantive economies and the fundamental values that should be defended and institutionalised, ranging from social, gender, and climate justice to civil equality and the democratisation of the economy.

The meeting will kick off with the ‘EcPol Winter School’ on 30 January 2025, where guest experts will lead debates on doctoral projects presented by students.

Chaired by José Reis, who will give the opening address on 31 January, the meeting will bring together national and international experts from a wide range of disciplines who understand economic phenomena as shaped by social, political, philosophical, legal, cultural, technological and environmental factors. These phenomena need to be studied in their institutional, historical and geographical contexts. International keynote speakers include Jayati Ghosh, a renowned Indian development economist, and Ingrid Kvangraven, Senior Lecturer in International Development at King's College London.
