The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (FLUC) is paying tribute to João Gouveia Monteiro with the conference Miles et Bellum, on 28 and 29 November, starting at 2 pm.

Miles et Bellum, which translates as "the warrior and war", sums up the purpose of the colloquium: reflecting on topics related to medieval warfare, including its spaces, scenarios and actors.

"Although he has also worked on other topics, such as chroniclers and chronicles, Byzantinism and, more recently, the history of religions, João Gouveia Monteiro is an international reference in medieval studies, particularly for his research on medieval warfare. This colloquium recognises the importance and timeliness of his work", explains João Nisa, one of the organisers.

The Miles et Bellum Colloquium, organised by João Nisa (Centre for the History of Society and Culture, University of Coimbra) and Miguel Gomes Martins (Institute of Medieval Studies, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Olisiponense Studies Office), will take place at Teatro Paulo Quintela, FLUC.

João Gouveia Monteiro is a full professor at FLUC, where he has taught Medieval History, Military History, History of Classical Antiquity, and History of Religions. He is also a researcher at the Centre for the History of Society and Culture. Monteiro founded and presides over the Iberian Association of Military History and is the founder and director of the Academy for the Encounter of Cultures and Religions. With a portfolio of 150 scientific works, including around 30 books, his contributions to this field are significant. Throughout his career at the University of Coimbra, he has served as Pro-Rector for Culture, Director of the University Press, and Director of the General Library.
