UC concert recreates musical atmosphere of Luís de Camões' era

The 'Art Lusitana ensemble' will perform pieces from four 16th-century Portuguese songbooks on Thursday 9th at 17:30 in St Michael's Chapel, on the same day as the presentation of the commemorative programme at the UC for the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões.

The concert "Music in 16th-century Portuguese songbooks" will take place on Thursday, the 9th of January at 17:30 in St Michael's Chapel, University of Coimbra (UC). The performance by the Ars Lusitana ensemble will coincide with the opening of the CAMÕES 500 exhibition and the presentation of the general programme of the UC celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões, to be held at 16:00 at the UC General Library.

As part of the celebrations, the concert - featuring André Ferreira (organ and bass), Maria Bayley (harp and soprano) and Teresa Duarte (viola da gamba and soprano) - will recreate the musical atmosphere of the time of Luís de Camões with pieces from the four remaining 16th-century Portuguese songbooks (the Belém, Paris, Elvas and Lisbon Songbooks). The concert will be preceded by the inauguration of the CAMÕES 500 exhibition and the presentation of the general programme of the UC celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões, at 4 pm in the São Pedro Room (2nd floor of the UC General Library). The event will include will include speeches by the UC Vice-Rector for Culture, Communication and Open Science, Delfim Leão; the Director of the UC General Library, Manuel Portela; the Commissioner General for the Commemorations of the 5th Centenary of Luís de Camões (and Full Professor at the UC Faculty of Arts and Humanities), José Augusto Bernardes; and the curators of the exhibition (and members of the organising committee of the UC commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões), Paulo da Silva Pereira and Filipa Araújo.
